Job Summary
The Kuali User Experience Architect (KUXA) facilitates the
user-centered design (UCD) process for the Kuali Student (KS) project,
an open source community initiative. The KUXA is part of a dynamic
team of UX designers, architects, business analysts and developers.
The KUXA is responsible for gathering stakeholder and user
requirements and developing wireframes, task flows, and user scenarios
to represent the layout, flow, and organization of websites and web
applications. At various project stages, the KUXA acts as researcher,
usability tester, and interaction designer. This position requires an
understanding of how to organize content and tools as well as
experience working as a member of software design and development
teams.
WORK PERFORMED
/Design, architecture, and usability/
- Create wireframes, site maps, user flows, user personas, feature
lists, mockups, and wireframe and HTML prototypes to describe and
test the intended user experience
- Develop user models, personas, scenarios and storyboards
- Help establish and maintain information architecture and usability
standards
- Use strong graphic design, information design and problem-solving
skills to manage the conception and creation of compelling, highly
usable web interfaces
- Apply UX design patterns uniformly across all development nodes and
within partner projects
- Define and implement technical requirements with web developers
/Research and testing/
- Analyze business and functional requirements for Kuali Student and
related web applications
- Design research protocols, prepare research plans, and maintain and
develop usability templates
- Conduct rapid iterative usability testing of wireframes, mockups,
and prototypes to validate whether features and products have met
business and usability objectives
- Conduct competitive site research; review and analyze industry
trends; and make recommendations to enhance user experience
- Coordinate focus groups, card sorts, surveys and other methods of
user testing; analyze test results; make recommendations
QUALIFICATIONS
- Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of six years
experience or communications services or the equivalent combination of
education and experience. Minimum of six years of related education
and experience in communications, HCI, information architecture, or
UCD, including a university degree in a relevant discipline.
Demonstrated experience in communicating abstract design ideas,
creating user interfaces, optimizing application flow, and developing
for a variety of browsers and platforms.
- Demonstrated experience performing various forms of user research
(contextual inquiry, focus groups, usability testing, etc.).
- Demonstrated success in staying current with user-centered design
processes and methodologies; strong grasp of strategic communications
theory and practice.
- Strong understanding of the user-centered design principles with
experience performing UX activities throughout the entire software
development life cycle.
. Mastery of principles of web design, and the ability to create
functional web interfaces using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and related
languages.
- Mastery of browser standards and related interface issues; knowledge
of WCAG and Section 508 Accessibility compliance standards is an
asset.
- Knowledge of UX-related design and prototyping tools (e.g., Axure,
Morae, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Omnigraffle, Photoshop, Visio, etc.).
- Ability to use online communication and screen-sharing technologies
for up to 7 hours/day to work successfully with teams in disparate
geographic locations.
- Demonstrated ability to function as a member of a team. Ability to
exercise diplomacy, tact and discretion when working with confidential
and/or sensitive information and in dealing with various levels of
administration and external agencies.
- Capacity for creativity and research; ability to exercise
initiative, resourcefulness and judgment.
- Professional experience in a post-secondary institution or similar
environment an asset.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision; accuracy and
attention to detail.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Leadership and facilitation skills.
