Social event: 7:30pm to 9pm (back room of the Railway Club 579 Dunsmuir Street)

Incorporating numbers and data into your design process is much simpler than you think. IAs and UX designers are already "web analysts”: Our in-depth knowledge of user behaviour provides us the ability to glean vital, actionable insights from analytics data that others, such as marketers and business analysts, might miss.

This talk will remove mystique around the ‘web analytics’ process and speak to common misconceptions IAs have with this area of practice. Through tips and examples of tactical applications of web analytics data in a ‘UX friendly’ context, we will show that analytics is an efficient tool for gaining rapid insight into user behaviour and improving the value of our designs.

We will illustrate ways analytics data can be brought into play with familiar IA and UX processes and provide examples of how metrics extend the life of our early research. We will show how personas help drive search analysis, audience targeting drives useful segmentation, and internal search data informs content strategy. This talk aims to show IAs and UX professionals why web analytics should be on their radar and how it can help them find a common language with their business and marketing counterparts.

The presentation and delivery was great, but I thought it was too introductory (and I'm no analytics expert). Given that this was the first UE meetup charging admission I was expecting that it would offer deeper content. 30 min seemed too short and increased detail about case studies, methods and tools would have made it more useful.

Lynne made a strong case for why UX and Designers should care about Web Analytics. Granted, I'm an online marketer whose work has a strong concentration on Web analytics, so I'm already a believer. Having said that, I gained a lot of insight into how UX practitioners perceive Web analytics. I came out of the event having learnt points that will make my argument in favour of joining Web analytics and design even stronger. She was very well prepared and confident in her delivery. It was clear that the information she provided was backed by proficiency in the field.

The presentation was very beneficial to me, as the topic of utilizing more analytics in my work has been top of mind. I have not historically been an analytic data person, but totally agree with Lynne that the numbers , whether data points or ROI, are major credibility boosters. Of course, using hard quantitative numbers as usability testing outputs has been part of my arsenal for years, I am now consciously looking to expand on the data sets I use and drive the need for. As always, Linda (I didn't get a chance to say hi) had some great insights as well on how to engage stakeholder members to own (so you can look to them as experts in their domain) the specific data points you need to get the full picture. This is empowering for all parties, so an excellent tip. Linda is a master of workshop/meeting management. Lynne's presentation also provided ample opportunity for Q&A and open discussion. Thanks Lynne!

Good info for those who design without analytics and good reminders why for those of us who do, plus some new ways to think about tying the two together for me. Well done Lynne.
